INTRUDER

Rated R
1989

Someone inside the Walnut Lake Market has taken "everything must go" a little too seriously. While working after hours to slash prices, an anonymous killer is using the store's own machinery to slash the staff, causing a clean-up in aisles three, four and nine, and generally ruining any chance of getting a good referral. When one survivor outlasts her expiration date, the killer is exposed and the real horror begins. This lesser known slasher has great practical effects and features Bruce Campbell, Sam Raimi and Ted Raimi in small but memorable roles. Though flawed, Intruder is a gory good time.

THE GREASY STRANGLER...Grease Is the Word

the greasy strangler
The Greasy Strangler (NR) 2016

Jim Hoskings' completely ridiculous horror movie is part Pink Flamingos, part This Is Spinal Tap and part Scary-Guy-Covered-In-Axle-Grease-Exposes-His-Weirdly-Shaped-Genitalia-And-Murders-People.

A fried-food craving sociopath (played hilariously by former hair dresser Michael St. Michaels) and his middle-aged son (Sky Escobar) work together on the seedier side of Los Angeles. In order to eek out a living, they charge incredibly stupid people to take a walking tour of decrepit doorways and plastered brick walls that the pair claim are the sites of major events in the history of disco. The long-haired, prune-faced Big Ronnie delivers this made-up history with such a deadpan authority that one can almost overlook the big creepy bulge that protrudes from the crotch of his tight pink pajamas.

Almost.

A SERBIAN FILM... Lights... Camera... Dysfunction!

HORROR MOVIE REVIEW
A Serbian Film (Sprski Film) (NC-17) 2010
Serbian with English subtitles

What the hell, Serbia?

I assume not every citizen of your country is a hooded sex freak doped up on horse amphetamines. But my god, how many are there?

Because I need to tell you, A Serbian Film makes it seem like a lot.

BIG BAD WOLVES...My What Big "Oys" You Have

Big Bad Wolves (NR) 2013
Hebrew with English Subtitles

Stop me if you've heard this one.

Guy walks into a dungeon to do some torturing, but just as he's lifting his hammer the phone rings. "I have to take this," he grumbles to his victim.

"It's my mother."

And there you have the essence of Big Bad Wolves, a quirky movie full of crime and punishment, and a healthy dose of chutzpa.

OLDBOY...Hammer It Home

Oldboy (R) 2003
Korean with English subtitles

So this whole eating of the live octopus thing.

Do you mean to tell me that in South Korea I can walk into a restaurant and order completely not dead cephalopods to stuff into my mouth like water balloons with eyes? How would that order go, exactly?

"Yes, I believe I will have the squirmy and definitely still alive slimy octopi please..."

"Certainly sir. And how would you like your octopi not cooked?"

I've seen a lot of disgusting things in my life, but eating something that has the potential to block your airways with its wriggling tentacles might beat out "Twerking" on the puke-o-meter. (If you have a preferred word for intestinal distress, please feel free to clutch your stomach and scream it repeatedly here.)

So yeah, there's that.

But hey! Why don't we go ahead and talk about the movie. Because despite it's culinary indiscretions, director Chan-wook Park's psychological thriller is truly a feast for the senses.
